What Does EV Charger Installation Cost?

How Much Does It Cost to Install an EV Charger in Maryland?

EV charger installation at Ryan Electric ranges from $470 to $2,700 or more, depending on several factors specific to your home and your charger. Every installation is quoted at a flat rate with no hidden fees — you’ll know exactly what you’re paying before any work begins.

What Affects the Price?

What Drives the Cost of EV Charger Installation?

No two homes are the same, and neither are two EV charger installations. Here’s what determines where your project falls in the price range:

Level of Work Required

The most straightforward installation involves mounting a charger at a location that already has adequate power nearby. More involved jobs require running a dedicated 50-amp circuit from your electrical panel to the garage or parking area, installing a new breaker, and commissioning the charger — this is the most common scenario for homes that haven’t had an EV charger before.

Distance of the Wire Run

The farther the charger is from your electrical panel, the more wire, conduit, and labor is required. A charger installed in a detached garage, on the far side of the house, or in an outdoor parking area will cost more than one installed directly adjacent to the panel.

Underground Work

Some installations require running conduit underground — for example, from a house to a detached garage. This involves trenching, weatherproof conduit, and additional materials, which adds to the overall cost.

Age and Condition of Your Home

Older homes present unique challenges. Wiring may need to be brought up to code, panels may be at capacity and require upgrades, and older construction methods can make routing wire more labor-intensive. Homes built before the 1990s often fall in the higher end of the price range for this reason.

Panel Capacity

If your existing electrical panel doesn’t have room for a dedicated 50-amp circuit, a panel upgrade or sub-panel addition may be required before the charger can be installed safely and to code.

EV Charger Installation Across Central Maryland

Why Frederick County Homeowners Trust Ryan Electric for EV Charger Installation

Frequently Asked Questions: EV Charger Installation

Most homeowners install a Level 2 charger, which uses a 240-volt outlet (similar to a dryer outlet) and charges most EVs fully overnight. Level 1 chargers use a standard 120-volt outlet but charge very slowly — typically adding only 3–5 miles of range per hour. Ryan Electric can help you evaluate your vehicle, your driving habits, and your home's electrical setup to recommend the right charger for your situation.
In most cases, yes. Installing a dedicated 50-amp circuit and EV charger requires an electrical permit in Maryland. Ryan Electric handles all permit coordination as part of the installation process, so you don't have to manage the paperwork.
Most EV charger installations are completed in a single visit, typically between 2 and 6 hours depending on the complexity of the job. Installations requiring underground work or panel upgrades may take longer.
Many homes can accommodate a dedicated EV charger circuit without upgrades, but homes with older panels or panels already near capacity may need an upgrade or sub-panel addition. We evaluate your panel as part of every installation quote.
A Level 1 charger plugs into a standard 120-volt household outlet and adds about 3–5 miles of range per hour. A Level 2 charger uses a 240-volt circuit and adds 20–30+ miles of range per hour, making it the practical choice for most EV owners. Most home installations are Level 2.
Installing a permitted, code-compliant EV charger typically has no negative impact on homeowner's insurance and may even qualify you for a discount with some carriers. We always pull permits and install to code.
